Brighton Courtyard Town Garden

Having lived with the contemporary extension of their large Victorian townhouse for a few years, our clients were ready for a garden that worked beautifully from the inside out. The living room features a dramatic Crittall-style picture window running the full length of one side, while the new kitchen has both windows and a large sliding door which opens across the whole space. The garden needed to echo this sense of openness – a courtyard layout with multiple “rooms” was the perfect solution. There’s ample space for dining with a generous feature table for family and friends, while a secret garden at the far end offers a peaceful retreat – a hidden sanctuary where our clients can chill after busy days.

Materials were carefully chosen: large format yard porcelain paving from London Stone paired with soft natural clay pavers from Allgreen Group, while fencing painted black provides a striking backdrop to the lush planting. The layered design brings depth and versatility, ensuring there’s always an area that feels right – whether after a space to be with friends, seeking sun, shade or seclusion at any time of day or year.

Taking cues from the architecture, the garden uses strong lines and complementary materials to balance classic and contemporary. The result is a space that reflects the character of the house, enhancing both home and lifestyle. Our clients are delighted with the result.

This garden was expertly designed by Bo Cook Landscape and Garden Design.

Next to the kitchen is a calm, intimate courtyard retreat, equally inviting whether viewed through glass or enjoyed outside. The clients love the way this space feels so much part of their open-plan kitchen when the sliding doors are open, with the gentle bubbling of the water feature adding to the atmosphere and sense of calm. Screening provides privacy without blocking light, while layers of foliage bring depth and seasonal interest. Deep plums, zesty greens and evergreen structure are offset by natural stone and crisp contemporary detailing.

Bespoke features were chosen to sit naturally within the planting, including stepping stones, with evergreen planting nestled in-between, adding character and winter structure. With feature trees for sculptural form and lush greenery for texture, this garden offers something to enjoy in every season – a space that connects indoors and outdoors seamlessly.
